whole life crumbles, leaving him with nothing. Even the Mob who watched his career with interest don't want to know.
For a brilliantly directed film, depicting hysterical Italian life, uniquely choreogra- phed fight scenes, an Oscar winning perfor- mance from ROBERT DE NIRO, blood. guts, violence and sad ending, 'Raging Bull' is an all-round winner. *****

Distributed by Twentieth Century Fox. Opens February5.
'Nine To Five' stars heavyweights JANE FONDA, LILY TOMLIN and DOLLY PARTON as office workers, determined to get their own back at their chauvinist-pig boss Frank (DABNEY COLEMAN). The film, a comedy about office life politics gets off to a promising start, eventually going over the top into unrealistic farce. FONDA - plays Judy, a new divorcee who's never worked in her life. Arriving at the office on her first day, conspicuously overdressed,
her supervisor, Violet (TOM LIN) an office veteran of twelve years takes one look and mutters 'we're going to need a special locker for the hat.' FONDA soon adjusts to office life, almost wrecking the Xerox machine in the process. DOLLY PARTON is charismatically excellent in her acting debut as the boss's blonde busty secretary. She is cold-shouldered by tier fellow workers who believe she's h_avingan affair with the (married) boss. However, she is soon proved innocent and teams up with Violet and Judy, becoming the best of friends, having one thing in common, the office. Eventually the detestable Frank along with his sycophantic spy (ELIZABETH WILSON) gets his deserts; but the ludicrous chain of events leading L\P to the story's happy ending are _too far
fetched being irritating, rather then amusing.
However, worth seeing for FONDA, TOM LIN and PARTON who act with each other, rather than against each other.

'PRIVATE BENJAMIN' (Cert. 'AA') executive producerGOLDIE HAWN, written and produced by NANCY MEYERS, CHARLES SHYER, HARVEY MILLER, directed by HOWARD ZEIFF, director of photographyDAYID M. WALSH, productiondesigner ROBERT BOYLE, editor SHELDON KAHN, A.C.E., music by BILL CONTI starring GOLDIE HAWN, EILEEN BRENNAN, ARMAND ASSANTE, ROBERT WEBBER, SAM WANAMAKER, BARBARA BARRIE, MARY KAY PLACE, HARRY DEAN STANTON, ALBERT BROOKS etc. I hr. 50 mins. long. Distributed by Columbia-EMI- Warner. Open February 26.
GOLDIE HAWN ('Private Benjamin's' executive producer, proving she's not just a pretty face) is delectable in her comic role as Judy Benjamin, a spoilt rotten Jewish princess. Her adoring parents (SAM WANAMAKER and BARBARA BARRIE) who look upon her as the Second Coming, can scarcely let her go to the bathroom by herself, they're .so intent on doing everything possible for her.
It's a miracle Judy hasn't turned· out to be a revolting repulsive slob, but is rather charming in her general helplessness. Her parents nearly wet themselves over her choice of husband, a high powered wealthy lawyer (ALBERT BROOKS) who drops dead from a heart attack on the actual wedding night. Judy has to face reality for the first time in her life, and 'midst her grieving at being widowed so young, she's tricked into joining the army by a wily recruit (HARRY DEAN STANTON). However, once in the army, Judy slowly adapts to her new life, proving a riches to rags story does work out.
'Private Benjamin' is a very funny film with a marvellous script (NANCY MEYERS, CHARLES SHYER, HARVEY MILLER), excellent comedic performances all-round, including a faultless performance from EILEEN BRENNAN, and an underlying message

'THE MIRROR CRACK'D' (Cert. 'A') produced by JOHN BRABOURNE and RICHARD GOODWIN, directed by GUY HAMILTON, screenplayby JONATHAN HALES and BARRY SANDLER, editor RICHARD MARDEN, productiondesigner MICHAEL STRINGER, director of photography CHRISTOPHER
CHALLIS BSC, music composed and conducted by JOHN CAMERON. Starring ANGELA LANSBURY, WENDY MORGAN, MARGARET COURTENAY, CHARLES GRAY, GERALDINE CHAPLIN, TONY CURTIS, EDWARD FOX, ROCK HUDSON, KIM NOVAK, ELIZABETH TAYLOR, MARELLA OPPENHEIM.
106 mins. Distributed by Columbia-EMI- Warner.
Opens February26.
Screenwriters JONATHAN HALES and BARRY SANDLER have laboured together to write some incredibly bitchy one liners for ELIZABETH TAYLOR and KIM NOVAK who play a couple of well
seasoned movie stars in Agatha Christie's 'The Mirror,Crack'd'. TONY CURTIS, play NOVAK's movie producer husband who tells the bickering stars to 'save it for the Oscars.'
ROCK HUDSON is the film director on the historical movie they're all working on· in England. He's also TA YLOR's husband. GERALDINE CHAPLIN plays The Rudds' (HUDSON and TAYLOR)
devoted secretary, but seems much more devoted to HUDSON.
The action takes place in a typical English country village where super sleuth Miss Marple (ANGELA LANSBURY) hangs out. After a mysterious murder happens in the middle of a typically English country fete, Miss Marple's typically English nephew (EDWARD FOX) comes all the way from London's Scotland Yard to unravel the mystery. A batch of red herrings-are strategically waved under our noses until the next murder occurs. As all Agatha Christie fans knows, it's Miss Marple with her intuitive detective work who unravels the knot. But the knot was unravelled much too quickly, solving Who did it, (the last person one would suspect). A quick explanation wraps up the motive behind the crimes. leaving one feeling slightly short-changed. ***
