Whiskers which is rather like seeing CHRIST at Cookham Regatta.
I was also somewhat surprised to see CHALKY WHITE with SABRINA GUINNI:::SSat Roxannes. (That's the new club just round the corner from The Lone Star.) The same evening and in the same club I had also spotted VICTOR LOWNDES which reminded me of the most wonderfully civilised New Years Eve I have ever spent, Lying in ajacussi drinking champagne. It was a wonderful party. The chic, charming and tallented KENNY LYNCH sang songs, DAI LLEiWELLYN told jokes, INGRID SEEWARD giggled a lot and REGGY BOSENQUET talked in tongues while MARALYN COLES lent over balconies and VICTOR played backgammon and I lay in the jacussi drinking champagne.

There are also reports of big black Lincolns with New Jersey plates around town.
While PETER STRING FELLOW was entertaining BETTE MIDLER he was also selling out his Manchester club. Did this really mean we had got him for keeps? Not quite. Apparently he's discovered Fort Lauderdale which is probably going to make NEVILLE ROBERTS very happy.
But at the other end of town the event of the month was happening while I was sitting in THE CHANCELLORS office in Doughty Street. A runner was already leaving Bouverie Street, turning left into Fleet Street and heading towards us. The message scrawled on the.folded scrap of

coarse paper wedged tightly into the split end of the runners cane was clear MURDOCH.had bought The Times.
Well not quite but thats what it looked like at first glance.
In fact, though MURDOCH'S offer had been accepted by Thomson's, there is obviously going to be many a word 'twixt cup and lip'.
The other event fraught with intrigue
was the VIVIANVENTURNRodgers
and Cowan organised trip to South
America for The Red Cross Ball, or was it the opening of another holiday complex similar to the one that DEMPSTER had so enjoyed in·South Africa last year. No one seemed to know, or care as long it was all free. Every 'hackette' and 'rentable title'
was clambering over each other in their haste to get a seat on the bus. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the whole thing sunk without trace. A sort of PR victim of the BERMUDA TRIANGLE?Only VIVIAN will ever know!
After all this excitement, the opening of The New Spirit in Painting exhibition at the ROYAL ACADEMY "'·asan extremely relaxed occasion. The RA has an endearing habit at their functions of serving drinks downstairs only and refusing to allow anyone upstairs with a glass in their hand· with the result that two-thousand people get very merry downstairs while half a dozen others actually view the exhibits upstairs. .
This particular evening guests appeared to be almost entirely made-up of the
musthaveheardaboutMARYleavinghim MeanwhileMOLLY(AllThingsToAll onthewindowsillandbecomingfrozenstiff Men)PARKINwascontinuingher'style
... You could bang him on the table. ...
Anyway MARY thawed him out and he's fine now . .. Well, he's a bitfat but we let
him eat what he likes ... MICK says he'll only livefor another year and really wefeel that if you've only got one year to live appearam;esdon't matter ... Don't you agree?"
The second forewarning was bumping into DEMPSTER and him being quite charming and it didn't get any better when I spotted VIDAL SASOON at The Cats
blitz' of London while ANDREW LOGAN celebrated his move into the new premises and the New Year and anything else that anyone could think of.
But this was also the season of clubs, so I thought it time to pay the odd visit to places long forgotten and you're not going to belie·ve this but Ben nets is alive and well with excellent food and Parahna fish under your feet and The Royal Ballet School Just around the corner!
Not only the season or clubs but the year
