A select collection of rich, glamorous and workaholic Ritz readers comment on how they maintain (or, in some cases, fail to maintain) their own special health and beauty, their likes and dislikes of cosmetics and scent and their pet hates and passions.
ANOUSKA HEMPEL
"/ always use cosmetics A la Carte in Motcomb Street who are superb at mixing and matching exactly to your skin type. They really do match up to the tiniest
freckle - I wouldn't use anyone else and ! can't recommend them highly enough. I don't go to a gym at all but I admire people who dQ. I simply don't have time to go but I have a day-to-day work out running up and down stairs; dealing with the children and Blakes - in the summer it almost becomes the equivalent of a sauna!
/ can't bear hush puppies on either sex and can't bring myself to speak to people who wear them. My other pet hates include drawn on eyebrows and Yesterday's
Yardley lipstick in the corner cracks of the mouth - ugh!"
VANESSA LLEWELLYN
"I'd say marry DAI LLE,WELLYN to look young and beautiful! I only usP Herbal skin cosmetics from Martha Hill in Marylebone High Street which are very gentle on the skin. I don't go to a gym but I keep trim by going to Wedgies every night. I hate women
who drum their fingernails on the table because I'm trying to grow mine and I get jealous. I loathe clogged mascara andfluffy
hair and most unattractive of all is long or greasy hair on men. I also hate women who make eyes at Dai. "
PETER YORK
''I'm totally unhealthy. take no exercise whatsoever and take ·minicabs everywhere - I NEVER walk. Nobody ever seems to send me aftershave, can't think why as I'd
love to be given some. I very much like Eau Savage and Paco Rabanne and I love Calandre on women. The cheapest and most delicious aftershare is Aqua di Silva which is ridiculously inexpensive. I can't bear 'flange· shoes on anyone and deeply textured ties (e.g. lincruster) give me the horrors. I love stylised women and Sloane Rangers and Mayfair Meres of course. Sophia Loren in Houseboat was very juicy and sexy."
CLIVE JAMES
"I've got absolutely nothing to contribute."

Savage. I dislike people who don't dress to the occasion and I won·1look at a man who wears anything but Wildsmith. Churches or Manalo Blahnik shoes."
EMMA SOAMES
·' You must have a bizarre idea of health and beauty to ring me up! I use Janet Sartin make-up which is elegant, overpriced American stuff what you can buy in London from Serena Balfour in Eaton Terrace. and also Clinique cosmetics. Although I've got absolutely no sense of smell I love Givenchy and Eau de Calandre aftershaves on men. I can 'r bear Brut or Mandate - you can smell the cheap shit a mile away. I wear First by Van Cleef and Arples. I'm not mad for dyed hair particularly on men and my other hates are chipped nail varnish, blue eye shadow. fat bellies. low crotches and jewellery on men."

older than 28. I have a great passion for Bruce Oldfield dresses, the Armani look and suede or leather clothes. Flat shoes are a must."
MARIE HELVIN
·'/only wear very basic make-up and I try to stick with inexpensive and small brand names. I'm verv keen on cosmetics which adhere to the beauty without cruelty scheme - I'm very against experiments on animals. I keep fit by using my mini trampoline that I brought over from the States and I work out on it for ten minutes every day - it ·s.wonderfuffor keeping your muscles toned. I love aftershaves mainly because Bailey doesn't - my favourite is Habit Rouge by Guerlain. I change my perfumes all the time but at the moment/ 'm wearing Nahema h_rGuerlain which has a very spicy smell. My hair is treated and cut by John Frieda. I also use a lot of the Body Shop products which are really fantastic.
They do a marvellous wheatgerm oil which I use to steam my face and also a Japanese Bean abrasive rub which I use every day because it's so gentle. They have such a good new range and/ 'm using a lot of their cosmetics at the moment. My hates? Long red fingernails - they reaf~r give me the creeps; Also dirty hair. About men? It's difficult to say - I love men ...
BILL REED
"I'm relatively healthy and have been told that I'm beautiful but three people recently told me that I'm getting a bald patch so I rang up by hairdresser. FRANK WARNER
at Michaeljohn who. incidentally. is the best hairstylist /or men in London. and he told me that I have nothing to worry about. I work out at the RAC club in Paff Mall three times a week where I do circuit training. If men arefeeling peeky I'd suggest having sunray 1reatment a/ Uvasun in Albermarle Stree1followed by a touch up with Elizabeth Arden bronzer for men. You'd he surprised how.many men use a tinted moisturiser under their eyebrows in 1he evenings! I don'r use aftershave - men should only wearsmellies in 1heevening. I wear Hals/on Z/4 or 'Monsieur Ba/main if ii's a hot summer's evening and sometimes Eau Savage by Dior. I haveface treatment by Fiona at Ricci Burn 's new men's salon. I 1oa1hemake-up on women excepl 1he sligh1es1bit of eye make-up. I de/est dirty billenfingernails, trousers tucked into boots and men who carry handbags. I 1hink that English women are 1hesexiest in 1he world because they can help mend an MGB in 1he morning and look stunning in a Bruce
Oldfield ball gown in the evening."
LADY DIANA COOPER

STEVE STRANGE
"/ don'r exercise at the moment but I'm really seriously 1hinking of doing it. I'm doing a 3 week crash course of dancing lessons with Spoonoch at the Dance Centre for our video tape of the Visage album. I also go swimming at the Chelsea Swimming Balhs but the only running that I ever do is runningfor taxis. I wear a lot of make-up, mainly the large brand names: Or/ane. Lancome, Christian Dior etc. I used to wear any old stuff until I well/ to Pru Walters at Ricci Burns who showed me the best

CATKIN VILLIERS
"Basically, as far as make-up goes I use a selection.- Max Factor, Quant. Lancome and Helena Reuben.Hein. I don't go to a·
- gym but I do use the Sauna at the RAC club. I simply can't manage jogging, it's far too strenuous. I tried it once and failed dismally. collapsing in the Catholic Church in Cheyne Rowfive doors awayfrom where I started. I prefer to wear men's aftershave rather than women's scent but I do use Givenchy Trois and Farouche by Nina Ricci. I really only like aftershaves by Floris or Penhaligons on men but I often wear Eau
Dona Alda cosmeticsfrom Chelsea Green. I don't go to a gym and once went jogging which exhausted me so much that I coufdn 't go to school so I wasn·1 allowed to do it again (not that I wanted to!). I exercise by riding in the country and going to dance classes at the Dance Centre. I have my hair cut by a nomadic hairdresser called Robert Frostick who comes to your
house which is wonderful. I wear any aftershave that happens to be in any pathroom that I'm in at the time or a little dab of vanilla essence. My big hates are hairy backs and shoulders, low bum lines and Jacob 's ladders."
PETER LANGAN

increasingly unhealthy and ugly. I don't go toagymbutIdojogfrom thetablestothe bar in the restaurant. I don't wear aftershave - I think that it's disgusting stuff and it makes my skinfeel funny. I don't like make-up or scent on women, maybe a little cologne but that's all. and I hate heavy perfumes. I also dislike thick lipstick that comes off on your cheeks or mouth and I
•think that women who have chipped nail varnishprobably have pearl grey underwear ontoo- doyouknowwhatImean?Ifa woman has to wear nail polish at all it has to be pristine. I hate tights and love stockings, preferably black."
PATRICK LICHFIELD
"I'm not really healthy or beautiful but I do do a programme of exercise every morning called the Canadian Air Force Exercises which you can buy in Penguin paperback. They 're good for me because you can do them in a hotel bedroom and as I spend 5 months of the year in hotels. they're ideal. I only wear one aftershave - Monsieur Givenchy and I put Wyberg Pine Essence in my bath. My favourite scent for women is Fiji by Guy Larouche. I'm very hygiene conscious so I love clean hair and hands. I prefer very little make-up on women as I photograph so many heavily made upfaces - I don't like no make-up at all butjust the bare minimum. One thing that I can't stand is uniformity - by that I mean image makers such as punks or Sloane Rangers who dress absolutely to the style with no personal individuality."
DOMINIQUE-DE BORCHGRAVE
three times a week for exercises - they're wonderfulfor muscle toning. I think that exercising is most important. My hair cut is an envied secret - everyone asks me where I have it cut but I really can't let you know. I wear Metamorphose scent from L 'Artisan Perfumer in Walton Street and I give my boyfriend Provencal which is also from
L 'Artisan. I use grapefruit oil bath essence in my bath, Ambre burning essence in my drawing room and Passion Fruit burning essence in my bedroom! f. can't stand anything that isn't trim or elegant, tinted or backcombed hair and long hair on anyone
Vetiverby Guerlainand YSL. I hate women who walk past you and their perfumes waft on for 1hree hours afterwards. people who copy me in an unoriginal way and chipped nail polish."
PAT BOOTH
"/ do exercises every morning and normally I go to the Sanctuary once every week, but whilst / 'm pregnant I don't do any strenuous exercising at all. I think that unless you 're in your very early twenties you should have nine months of relative rest during
pregnancy. I don ·1 wear a great deal of make-up, definitely no foundation - I feel
