I assumed JO DRINKWATER was still trying to organise lunch with LORD BURGERSH as she had bean involved In a vary long and giggly telephone conversation for what seamed llka half the morning.
Eventually I grabbed the receiver from her hand and told BURGHIE that as we ware vary busy I would vary much appreciate it if ha would stop pissing about and get his arsa down to JOE ALLEN& as I was vary aware that ha had sod all else to do.
Predictably, the voice on the other end of the line did not entirely share my opinion which didn't surprise ma as much as the broad Lincolnshire accent.
This bizarre conversation went on for soma time before my attention was attracted by JO who was either suffering soma extreme physical malfunction or trying to tall ma something.
Apparently she was trying to explain to ma that she had already completed luncheon
arrangements with the most charming good-for- nothing North of Callais and that I was now infect spa!l~ing.to GEOFF CAPES the second strongest n,an in the wortd I
The only reason I .even knew the man's name was that I; along with twenty-nine million
others, had recently watched him compete in The Strongest Man In The World contest on TV.
GEOFF actually came third In the contest but as the man who came second had bean automatically awarded five points for not competing in the final heat due to his opponent's
Injury, we all agreed that GEOFF came second. GEOFF CAPES was born and brad in
Lincolnshire (England's answer to Alabama)._Ona of nine children ha stands six feat five inches and weighs twenty-two stone. He's the type of man one agrees with quite rapidly.
At lunch in Joe Allena I agreed that JO was alrlght and that there was absolutely no reason why ha shouldn't 'quite fancy 'er'. I also agreed that the waiter, standing hand on hip, was quite
possibly 'a bit odd'.
I ordered a minute steak and a salad. JO
ordered a large chefs selad with house draHing which GEOFF offered to fight her for after. ordering chilli starter and liver main. I persuaded JO to part with the dreHing and she reminded GEOFF about his mother's appearance on tile RUSSELL HARTY show and her comments on
his enormous food consumption.
GC: I only eat huge amounts when rm training, otherwise I eat quite normally.
DL: Do you have a weight problem? (Dumb question. At twenty-two stone of course he's got a problem.) GC: No .. .'I go 'up and down. If rve got a meeting in two months time I go up and if there's nothing on I go down. I can lose seven pounds in a day just by working out and not eating. At the moment rm twenty-two stone but I need to be twenty-four if rm going to win the next strongest man contest. (Big grin.) Which I am going to win.
DL: You originally made your name as a shot-putter.
